We would like to thank the Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby Team for inviting our Chief Executive, Jane Emmerson, over to Paris to watch some matches in the International Wheelchair Rugby Cup
The eight best wheelchair rugby teams including Great Britain have gathered in Paris and will be spending until 22nd October 2023 competing in the championships.
The landmark tournament, which started on Wednesday in the Halle Carpentier stadium, marked the first time World Rugby and World Wheelchair Rugby have collaborated to stage their premier competitions at the same time.
The GB team, who are placed in Pool A, will be facing Australia, Canada, and Denmark in their initial matches. Head Coach Paul Shaw said “Following on from the European Championships, where we importantly secured our ticket to the Paralympic Games next year, the team have been working hard to continually improve. The standard of competition has never been higher in wheelchair rugby and I am relishing the opportunity to see what these 12 athletes can achieve against some of the top teams in the world.”
Above are some pictures of Team GB in the opening match against Denmark.
It was a great start for them. They then went on to play Australia where they were narrowly beaten.
The third game also saw a close result when the team played Canada.
On Saturday morning at 8am the team will play New Zealand. This exciting match will decide which placement match they’re in
Head of Performance Barry Mason had said at the start “We are thoroughly looking forward to the competition. The IWRC presents us with a rare opportunity to play the best teams in the World, alongside an invaluable opportunity for players to be internationally classified. These events don’t come around too often and will provide us with a vital performance marker as we continue our preparations towards Paris 2024.”
